Why this matters
Losing a newsletter draft is frustrating, especially after investing time in it. The editor has both an automatic save and a manual save button, but certain configurations and situations can stop saving from working properly.
Save manually, often
Automatic saving runs in the background, but it can be affected by many technical factors. Use the manual save button regularly, and always before closing the editor.
Common causes of draft loss
Browser issues
- Extensions and blockers: ad blockers (AdBlock, uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger), tracking or privacy extensions, and browser antivirus can block save requests or stop the editor from reaching the server.
- Browser configuration: privacy settings that are too strict can block the cookies the editor needs. Private/incognito mode can prevent saves from persisting. A full cache, or an outdated/unsupported browser, can also cause save problems.
Connection issues
- Unstable Internet: a slow or intermittent connection (common on public Wi-Fi) can stop a save from completing, and losing the connection mid-save makes it fail.
- Application timeout: if a save takes longer than expected (very slow connection, a draft with many images, a temporarily overloaded server), the editor may stop trying and the save fails without a visible error.
Concurrent usage
- Multiple tabs: opening the same draft in two tabs can cause conflicts; the last save overwrites the other. The editor does not currently detect this.
- Multiple users: if two people edit the same draft at once, the last to save overwrites the other's work. There is currently no warning for this.
Navigation and session
- Premature closure: closing the tab/browser, navigating away, or using the Back button before a save finishes can lose changes.
- Expired session: after a long period of inactivity your session can expire, which prevents saving. You will need to log back in, and unsaved changes will be lost.
System and network
- Firewall and antivirus: personal or corporate firewalls and antivirus can restrict communication with the server. Corporate networks are often more restrictive.
- System resources: too many open tabs, low memory, or an overloaded computer can slow the browser enough to affect saving.
Best practices to protect your drafts
1. Use manual save regularly
Save manually after adding an important content block, after importing images, before previewing, before leaving the editor, and every 10 to 15 minutes on complex content. Wait for the save indicator to disappear before closing; if you don't see confirmation, save again. The editor also prompts you to save before leaving the page.
2. Optimize your browser
Use a recent version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge, and keep it updated. Temporarily disable ad blockers for the platform, or add it to your privacy extensions' allowlist. Allow cookies for the platform, avoid private browsing for drafts, and make sure your browser doesn't delete cookies on close.
3. Manage your connection
Make sure your connection is stable before starting, and save more often on public Wi-Fi. If your connection is unstable, save more frequently, work in smaller sections, and consider a wired connection.
4. Avoid usage conflicts
One tab, one user. Never open the same draft in multiple tabs, and coordinate with your team so only one person edits a draft at a time. Before opening a draft, check that no colleague is working on it and close other platform tabs.
5. Keep your session active
Don't leave the editor open and untouched for long periods. If you need to step away, save and close the editor rather than leaving it idle.
6. Manage your computer's resources
Close unnecessary tabs and resource-heavy apps before working in the editor, restart your browser during long sessions, and make sure you have enough free memory.
7. Be aware of corporate environments
Corporate networks may have restrictive firewalls, security policies, or aggressive antivirus. Ask your IT department to allowlist the platform, and test from a different network to confirm whether the issue is your corporate network.
Quick checklist before starting
Before working on an important draft, confirm:
- I'm on an up-to-date, supported browser.
- I've disabled or configured my blockers for the platform.
- My Internet connection is stable.
- This draft isn't open in another tab.
- No one else on my team is working on this draft.
- I've closed unnecessary tabs to free up resources.
- I plan to save manually and regularly.
Still losing your work?
If problems persist, contact our Support team and include:
- the browser and version you're using,
- your installed browser extensions,
- a detailed description of when the problem occurs.
As preventive maintenance, clear your browser cache regularly, keep your browser and extensions up to date, and review your privacy settings periodically.
